2010 Mercury Music Prize Recap & Video Footage

Question: what do you get if you take 1 Mercury Music Prize award nomination for 'Sigh No More' + 1 Mercury Music Prize win for The xx + an evening of great music with friends? Answer: 4 very happy - if not slightly worse for wear yesterday - Mumford & Sons.

The xx album is amongst the top 5 played on the M&S stereo and has been a consistent source of great pleasure for the band ever since it debuted earlier this year - so a great big heartfelt congratulations on a entirely deserved win.

UK folks: if you'd like to witness some of the action from the night you can watch the music highlights, including our boys' performance of 'The Cave', and debate on the iPlayer. Before the show, the BBC asked all of the nominated acts what they would do if they won which the band took as bate to provide some suitably amusing responses.

For those outside of the UK who can't view the highlights - there's a little interview with Marcus and Ben you can check out on the Mercury Music Prize YouTube channel here and also, a podcast in which the band talk us through the tracks on 'Sigh No More', currently available to download for free here.

UK friends: EVERYBODY (we originally thought this was one just for the UK, but turns out we are "US-a-go-go" - to embellish the words of erinnic, hee hee)! If you missed the collaborative show Mumford & Sons played with Laura Marling and Dharohar Project one boiling hot day in London last month and you are, even just a little, intrigued as to how it all went - read on...

Over the past year or so, the directorial duo FRED&NICK have accompanied Mumford & Sons on their various tours to capture through a lens the experiences of the band on the road.

You may well have seen these videos before, but perhaps not yet in their full length form. Part I delves a little further into the roots and beginnings of the band and how, through various instruments, shared music tastes, friendships, and circumstances, Mumford & Sons came into being. Whilst Part II takes us through the landscapes and contrasting musical spheres of the India and US tours...and also the fondly remembered/vaguely infamous 'Tasche tour.

Oi Oi saveloy! Well, multiple saveloy really. Oi Oi pack of saveloy? What's the correct collective noun for a saveloy? 'Herd' would be ridiculous, so we must therefore assume it as, clearly, a murder of saveloys.

Look out lips, here's the chips...

By now, you will have no doubt correctly guessed Mumford HQ to be the quintessential English gent; born in a bowler hat and raised on an Oxford-weave estate. I take pride in my tea and strides in my whites. I reject advances in the modern age: I fix my ties with Windsor knots and my woes with stoical silence. I take even further pride in my ability to obsess-to-the-point-of-lunacy (indeed, deviancy) about the weather. Come rain or shine, there I be found, before flickering screen, waiting patiently (naturally) for the Ceefax weather update.

I measure my life not in days, weeks, months or years, but in kilopascals, watts, centigrades and fahrenheits. The markers on my journey to the grave are laid in inches not memories. Inches of mercury...

We all know how mercury works, right? When something is hot, mercury goes up, right? So how hot does something have to be to go up for a Mercury...? Really hot? Hot like pure fiyah? Hot like The Sons?

US/Europe fans and beyond; we've been reading your comments and just wanted to say - our sincerest apologies that the new EP with Laura Marling & Dharohar Project is not yet available in your land/s. This is something that the people up'top of M&S HQ towers are working hard to find a solution to, although unfortunately, at the moment, we can't promise anything other than that we will do our very best. If it's any consolation though you can listen to two tracks from the EP here ('To Darkness / Kripa') and here ('Devil's Spoke / Sneh Ko Marg') - and also view some photos from the show here.

It turns out last week's live stream was also subject to the same barriers (it's all about rights, innit), but but but.... we stumbled across this footage which we hope will at least make up for it in part. I'm not suggesting you send pictures into Mumford HQ, that'd be weird... And possibly illegal. These waters have witnessed some mailing list larks in the far, dark past and I won't be dragged there again, I won't! I can't! I'll have no part in it! But what if you could see me? How can We. In addition to this, we are pleased to bring you the news that those who book tickets to a UK show will also be presented with the option to pre-order a 4 track 10" EP, by 'The Wedding Band', simply called 'Volume 1', 'The Wedding Band' comprises of Mumford & Sons, and some musical pals, recording some tracks that get played on the road, but very rarely on stage. The 10" EPs pre-order, is limited to 100 copies per show, and can only be bought in conjuction with gig tickets.

Copies of the EP will also be available for fans to pick up at the band's short run of European dates towards the end of September in Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin and Brussels.

You Danced To A Different iTune Yesterday

One of the many and varied contradictions to be found in my character (I must stress however, that I am not, even in generous description or high doses-of, 'a character'), is the razor-sharp double-edged blade of my double standards; in an otherwise 24 carat carbon-complexion, it is the one glaring flaw destined to dump this dazzler in the bargain bin.

Take consistency.

I am not consistent. I have at points been 'sistent'; I was persistently annoying up until the age of... well, let's just say I'm still persistent... but never consistent. I have a feeling that this website may very well be the closest to consistent I've ever been. Consistently what I'll leave to you... Totally unreasonable then that I should find inconsistencies in the world proper fuming: the other day, it was hot. Really hot. Yet today, unrelenting grey. And I am blue. The Sun has seemingly struggled through three rounds with Cirrostratus Fibratus before the raining heavyweight's finally, and literally, sparked the former golden boy out cold. In fact, though I wore shorts in to Mumford HQ towers this very morn, predicting a warm reception, it is now raining. IT'S RAINING. I am in for a whole world of wet hippo hair pain on the commute home. Cheers.

Hot/cold/hot/cold - I can't work in these conditions! I barely work as it is! One minute shorts, the next, trousers. Has man ever faced a greater challenge? Don't think so!

Bloody brilliant. Probably get a cold now. I'll spend the next week melting down Lockets, intravenously ingesting hit after hit of honied heroin; crushing Tunes to a fine powder before rubbing the blackcurrant grit into my raspberry gums, hurting for sweet sinus relief.

Sigh. I don't even like Tunes. But I do like tunes. If there's any tunes cruising for a crushing, it's iTunes.

Mumford & Sons are playing the iTunes Festival! At London's Roundhouse! The Roundhouse is bloody lovely! Get yourself to that round house on the 9th July for an amazing night of musickness!!

And what is more - much more - the boys will be joined by the ridiculously lovely and sublimely talented musicians of the Dharohar Project for the show! Twas these gracious souls with which The Sons shared many an Indian stage back in December of last year as part of the cultusical (blended two types of spice then, 'cultural' and 'musical', feeling that?) exchange, and let's not be bashful, this can mean only one thing... AMAZING SCENES!

Johnny Flynn 'Been Listening'

Dear Friends,

I don't usually do things like this, but I thought it was a special occasion.

Johnny Flynn released his second album, 'Been Listening', on Monday, and I urge you to go and pick up a copy. It's my favourite album of the year.

Some of you may already know him, some of you may have seen us tour together, some of you may even have heard us request him on the radio at every station we've visited in the last two years. Johnny and his band, 'The Sussex Wit' were some of the first people to put faith in us and take us on the road with them, and they remain some of our most dear friends and greatest inspiration. We think they're wonderful, basically.

But all of that personal shit aside, this album is ridiculously good. And I think it's really important; it's controlled and it's unfettered; it's patient and it's urgent. It's just damn good.

So long live Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit, and enjoy it as much as we have. We salute you.

A Rolled Away Stone Gathers No Wet Sheets: VideOH! Yo!

Change of pace today. Shaking things up, keeping the cakes fresh. Coming out swinging. Swinging like that time at school when that kid bare dropped some dread on you, cussed you out cold and cut you deep with some junior jive, chatting some rank about you being a bed-wetter, and you were like, 'Momma said knock you out', and you just started swinging them little arms like a teeny turbine, and you were like, 'POW! Take that Charlotte Jenkins!'. But then she was all like, 'brown belt, white tag BLAM!' and straight round-housed you on a Chun Li tip. 'Member that?.

So yeah, the idea was that I'd fill you in on the knowledge first, then, you know, babble in the post-knowledge paragraphs, giving you the option of wading through the waffle to reach the mysterious City of Golden Wisdom, or just sacking it off. Hasn't worked out exactly as I'd imagined, I'll be honest, Best laid plans and all that. Still, as per our earlier interaction, sometimes you just have to roll with the punches...

Rescheduled Rome Date Announced!

As you may remember, The Sons were regretfully and reluctantly forced to cancel their Rome gig recently owing to Marcus succombing to a particularly vicious bought of tonsilitus; his angered and enraged tonsils - like two tiny teenagers - flared up in a fit of petulance, wreaking havoc upon the family throat. Typical teen-like tonsil behaviour, classic.

Fortunately, the hormonal fog of adolescence has lifted and the tearaway tonsils have matured into a pair of fine, glistening grown-up glands any parent would be proud of. So fit and healthy once more, it is with great delight that we can now announce that the rescheduled show is to take place on 15th July 2010 once again at the origial venue, Rome's Circolo Degli Artisti!

This makes us, and we hope you, very happy indeed, and we'd like again to say a massive THANK YOU to all the fans who'd made lengthy (and even not so lengthy) journeys to the show and in the face of cancellation were fantastically understanding, gracious and kind.

A Little Message from Marcus...

Dear One and All,

I wanted to write to apologise to those of you who travelled to the Rome gig and were told at the door that we had to cancel. Cancelling a gig is something we don't do easily; this is only the second gig in 3 years that we've cancelled. But we had to do it because I just couldn't physically sing at all. I've had a dirty dose of tonsilitis that is just about healing, but has been very annoying indeed. I wanted to say to you directly that I'm sorry, especially to all of those who took a lot of effort to be there, that the decision was taken so late in the day. The reason it was such a late decision was that I wanted to leave all the time I could to try to get better for the gig, but I simply couldn't sing.

I promise we're determined to come back to Rome and are already looking into when we can do it. I assure you it's a priority for us, so we'll keep you updated!

I'd also like to thank all of you who have sent lovely 'get well soon' messages, I think they're working and it means we won't have to cancel any more shows soon! Sometimes it's a really great thing knowing that people give a shit, and we're all on the same side here. So cheers.

If you're in Britain, enjoy election day and go exercise some democratic rights!! I just got back from the Ballot Box myself, and am revelling in the joys of the Secret Ballot Act of 1872.

Whoomp! There It Is, A little Later, Say 'Whoomp', There It Is!

Previous posts would perhaps lend notion and weight to the idea that I am, probably, quite likely, the sort of chap that is always late. You may then be surprised to learn that I am, in truth, by and large, when all is said and done, nearly always on time. Or there abouts. Rarely early I concede, but prompt.

I try my best.

I think some things are best served late though: tea for example. Afternoon tea specifically. That's nice late - a late afternoon tea. 'Bout 5:30p.m. Cup of Earl Grey maybe. Beaker of squash more likely... With a pink wafer. Additive smash.

I also like my music served late... CAN YOU SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING YET?... not too late, but later. Later than late afternoon tea, like, at around say, ten. Like at around the same time they screen Later with Jools Holland. Like about the time Mumford & Sons played Later with Jools Holland. Sort of like THIS!

ATTENTION! Tonight's Circolo Degli Artisti Show in Rome CANCELLED

It's true. I have some unfortunate, but sadly unavoidable news; tonights Circolo Degli Artisti show has been CANCELLED.

Mumford & Sons are - and this cannot be stressed enough - properly, properly gutted to have to reschedule tonight's performance in Rome. The Sons' are always loathe to pull shows but Marcus has been suffering with a sore throat for the last few days which has developed into acute tonsilitis. As a result, and under Doctor's advice, he is unable to sing tonight. We will be announcing a rescheduled date for later in the year as soon as we can. In the meantime you can get a refund for your ticket(s) at the point of purchase.

An Un-Plugged SPIN with Mumford & Sons? Why Not!

Despite increasingly desperate attempts to silence me and my big mouf and save the Mumford HQ family further embarrassment at my literary hand, I am bravely forging ahead with what will be the second in a series of however-many-you-can-reasonably-be-expected-to-stand confessionals.

Today's takes place some years before the last, but includes similar ingredients: 1 part facetiousness to 2 parts idiocy to all parts me to all points toward disaster...

I remember vividly the assorted object d'ar that decorated the many and any exposed surface around my childhood home. All, realistically, of little-to-no value to even the beadiest-eyed bargain-hunter, with the possible exception of one supremely ugly statuette; some supposedly classical creation, all wanton limbs and bared breasts, passed down through generations under the totally unfounded assumption that, because it was old, was therefore automatically worth at least the cost of a new car. Every family has one of these: a vase, a painting, a clock, a grandparent - anything archaic your parents can dream of one day proudly parading on the Antiques Roadshow, before holding heroically above their heads in hollow victory over The Man as they drive away from the office and into an early-retirement sunset in a magnificent new Mondeo... Flicking fingers at the neighbours as they pass...

Okay, now as I recall, the following events took place on a Thursday, and as such I can only assume I'd somehow stumbled across a little 'free time' from school, raising the stakes considerably. Anyway, after some experimentation in the kitchen, and giddy on the thrill of the 'bunk', my friends and I decided to heighten our delight by spinning around and around and around and around until we entered deep space. So we did. And I hurtled head first, at warp speed, toward the statuette. Oh Number 1 I made it so. Actual impact. Actually decapitated. Literally shattered my parent's dreams... And actually hid in the shed for a week.

Moral: Pritt Stick don't stick marble.

That is one spin I will regret for the rest of my life.

Mumford Muscles From Brussels: LIVE Stream!

I wasn't able to make it to my graduation ceremony, due in small part to my inability to adhere to my University's totally unnecessary Don't Be Late Rule, but I suspect perhaps due in far larger part to my inability to adhere to it's draconian No Nudity In The Library rule. Pfft, 'taste and decency'. Whatever.

And so, forced from the grand celebrations and banished from the bosom of academia, I joined the other ne'erdowells in the adjacent room and settled down in front of the ageing box to watch a live stream of the ceremony. We sat alongside relatives and watched as our names were read out by respective Deans and scrolls accepted by respective friends with a collective sense of relief and enormous euphoria. And as I looked at my shamed, sobbing parents I comforted them with the words, "Don't cry, it's only a TV programme". The other rejects were moved to their feet and united in applause - it was singularly the greatest moment of my young life; even my Mum was forced to acknowledge the remarks rapier wit with a slight smile... Just before she administered a devastating left-hook. Touche ma Mere, touche.

Moral: Don't drop your denim for a fiver in the anthropology aisle of a library.

Ahh, another valuable life lesson learnt the hard way. But I did also learn that watching live streams of pretty awesome events that you were unable to attend in person is pretty, well, awesome, and to that end, may I excitedly inform you all now that that is exactly what you can all do tomorrow when the Sons' show in Brussels will be streamed LIVE at 8:45pm via the massive minds at ABtv! Mumford HQ loves television. Yeah, you read me, I heart TV. I generally try and squeeze in up to nine hours a day. Swear down blud, believe. On a good day I'm literally looking at a double-figure sitting. Put it this way, anything less than three is a really bad day.

I'll watch anything: soaps, comedies, dramas, documentaries, docu-drama-comedies, cartoons, reality, anything. Can't get enough of it. My favourite is probably comedies. One of my favourite comedies was Frasier. Love Frasier, total japes, Niles is one of the finest comedic creations of our time. I also love cartoons. The Simpsons, somewhat predictably, is my personal choice. I'm a sucker for a cameo - got to love those guest voices. So Kelsey Grammar voicing one of the best characters EVER in the Simpsons - Sideshow Bob, natch - is pretty much the televisual equivalent of me having two massive cakes and eating them at once. While Miranda Kerr mops my heavily-sweating brow. Nom nom.

Mumford & Sons are playing their own sideshow at this year's Telluride Bluegrass Festival. NightGrass at Bluegrass sees bands performing at the main festy take a little time out later in the day to play at the beautiful* Sheridan Opera House, and The Sons are doing just that on the 18th of June! Magical! Line-up!

A Warts and All Session (Toad-Related, Will Make Sense If You Read On...Maybe)

Well hello. How are we? Well, I trust? How's the love life? The romance? The heart swells, the breaks and the aches? Kissed any frogs lately? Heard any songs, by a toad lately? No? Then lend me your lug-holes friends, 'cause all that is grey will be golden come this *EDIT: It's live NOW!, for that is when The Sons' special Song, by Toad session goes live for viewing pleasure and all out for your love...

Recorded one beautiful day in Edinburgh during last months tour, the boys played a few songs and engaged in chatter with the lovely gents that are Toad and the resulting results will be airing HERE by way of the tongue-in-cheeky-named 'Toadcast'!

For those not in the know, Song, by Toad began as a rather fine online musical-muck spreader before dipping it's muddy toe in the murky pond that is the record industry and transforming from simple blog-spawn to full-grown amphibious label; so pucker up and plant one on this toad's behind and show some support for their passion and endeavour, for they are good people.

Right, okay, this is getting ridiculous, there are only so many ways I can announce a festival! I'm running on reserves here. Help a brother (or sister, I could totally be a sister, you just have to ignore all those 'Cheryl Cole is well fit' references. Or not. Ooh, ambiguous) out!

If it weren't for the fact that all these festivals ARE BLOODY AWESOME I'd be sick of 'em. Add to that the buy-one-get-one-free fact that Latitude Festival is also quite simply 'mazing and my enthusiasm has been restored! Faith in festivals rising, rising like a proud salmon from the weary waters of my apathetic attitude.

So yeah, the boys Mumford are playing Latitude this year! For those who don't know, this is wonderful news, plain and simple. So now you do. Know. What? They'll be joined by the likes of Florence and her Machine, Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear, The National and good friends The Maccalads and The Temper Trap!

So unless you have a baby today, that is the best news you'll hear all day... Can't speak for tomorrow, you might get some better news. Further Festival Festivities. Or 'FFF' to His Friends (That's You)

We've announced mad heaps festivals on this website over the past few months, each and all by in large pretty good, with the possible exception of the Obscure Fruits Festival - don't remember it? You wouldn't, it was that obscure. So obscure in fact, that it never even existed, 'cause I just made it up. Post-modern madness...?

This particular festival I'm sharing with you now however, didn't fall to us to announce - falling instead just beyond my jurisdiction, by roughly the width of a single Wyatt Earp whisker, that's approx. 0.93mm FYI - but I can proudly bellow it's brilliance now. I am of course, talking about the wonderful Hop Farm Festival!

As a Matter of Fact, There Are All Manner of Matters to Consider...

We here at Mumford HQ are in absolutely no position to discuss matters of the heart. Each and every one of us - and when I refer to 'each and everyone of us', you understand I'm referring to me, right? I mean, despite my clever slight-of-word, there is no one else, you know that, right? This isn't Shutter Island people - is forever teetering on the cusp of total heart-meltdown; us all, natural romantics, rendering us incapable of dispatching even the simplest slice of un-biased advice.

However, we will say this: don't always be yourself. If you like a girl, but she doesn't like you, but she likes the kid with long hair and an earing, grow your hair son! Grab that safety pin son and pierce that ear 'til you cry out in pain, pass out in agony and are found by your Mum in the family bathroom, ear dipped lobe-deep in a TCP/crushed aspirin solution and tear-stained face telling the shameful tale that will be told every Christmas from now until time's end... Why won't you let it go Mum!? For the love of...

Anyway, on to a subject matter I feel at far greater ease discussing, matters of music. Music matters, if you will. Or if you also will, Why Music Matters.

So, why does music matter? Tricky. Fortunately, a rather fine (and presumably handsome) collection of musos (including Sigur Ros, Nick Cave and Kate Bush), and (presumably less handsome) labels, managers and retailers all got together to extol the virtues of music, to re-introduce the idea of music as a precious commodity and highlight how to identify legitimate sources of music online, keeping it precious. Now, they could have gone about this by all matter (thanks) of means - newsletterpostercampaignwhatever - but instead commissioned the aforementioned artists to produce a series of videos recounting personal events explaining exactly why, to them, music really is all that matters.

I find this to be rather great. We hope you do too. We also hope you find the VIDEO we have selected for your viewing pleasure to be equally great; it tells the story of Sigur Ros, walking up a mountain, then walking back down again. Doesn't sound amaze agreed, but it led to the recording of ( ), so in your face naysayer!

So we've established that Mumford HQ is actually quite partial to Sundays. We also seem to have gathered from your comments that you, in turn - not so partial. Your words lead me to believe that in fact, quite the reverse is true,and for you, Sundays do still very much... Suck.

A misery compounded no doubt by the fact that, as sure as night follows day, Monday day follows Sunday night. Or something. Now, not even Mumford HQ's perennially sunny disposition (*cough*) is immune to what can - at best - be described as Monday morning's unique 'charms'; personally, we pick ourselves up with a veritably varied feast of toast. Kitchen gets out of hand, we're mixing up the medicine like Danny - peanut butter, Nutella, bananas, Marmite, jam, just go with the flow baby, anything goes...

'Holy Communion Batman! It's a Stream!' - Robin

Hurrah! It's Friday! Have to love Fridays, it's the law. There's no actual law pertaining specifically, or indeed directly, to Fridays, more a good feeling towards weekends as a whole... But still, THE LAW. We've discussed at great length our affection for all things week's end before, but until now never divulged our secret passion for one night in particular.

Sunday night.

'Tis a good night. A great night. Sure, when Mumford HQ was younger, Sunday nights represented The End of the weekend, and as a great wave of impending doom crashed down around our fragile selves as we struggled to finish (read; start) our homework we came to resent all things Sunday; roasts and the Antiques Roadshow for two, but most of all, the Last of The Summer Wine (except Compo, God bless his soul. What a hero, such a joker and such dedication to that hat. And indeed Bat(ty)).

But this all changed the moment of the Communion club night's inception in the mind's of two young men, and the second it was delivered into our embrace at Notting Hill Arts Club. Run by one of our beloved boys - Mr. Ben Lovett - alongside Mr. Kevin Jones, Communion takes place each first Sunday of every month and offers a platform to emerging, and established, bands and artists to peddle their musical wares. DJ's soundtrack the later stages and everyone has an amazing time as they wave farewell to the weekend in style and set themselves up in positive mind to face the week ahead. Who could ask for more...?

No one. But such is the generous spirit of the Communion brethren that they have put together a wonderful compilation LP featuring a hand-picked selection of the great and good that have passed through the doors and performed, and this wonderful album is now available to buy!! 'Yeti Runs Festival!' Read All About It!

We all need a little mystery in our lives: the unexplained, the inexplicable, the smoke, the mirrors, the girls... Indeed, Mumford HQ i'self is shrouded in mystery. It's not a particularly well-fitting shroud, kind of loose, bags at the crouch, sags at the neck, but we put the receipt through the wash in the pocket of our Cape of Curiosity so we're stuck with it now - plus it's all soft an' that, cashmere blend, totally pimped out and perfect for a Sunday afternoon snoozle; some classic 80's film-fodder flickering on the box. Something like Harry and The Hendersons; the timeless tale of one family's hilarious, and not entirely unsuccessful, attempt to domesticate Bigfoot. Starring Jon Lithgow. And featuring a bonus baby Bigfoot. Sweet.

Ahh, Sasquatch, now that's a 'mystery' for you. Pfft, mystery schmistery, it's a dude in a Wooky suit. And he's wearing Uggs. MTFU you Wooky-suit-wearing weirdo, barefoot authenticity or GTFO.

There is however, nothing mysterious about how awesome the Sasquatch Festival, held at the Gorge amphitheatre in George, Washington, USA, that takes place Memorial Day Weekend - 29th May through 31st May - is. It's no great secret peeps, just amazing music, fantastic times, beautiful scenery and some magical memories silently screaming out to be made. Memories that will hopefully consist of a stirling and stirring performance from dear Mumford & Sons, who yes, have just been announced as part of this years line-up!!

Isn't it amazing how, even as an infant, you recognise true genius? An example, you always need an example, so with that in mind, please see; Sesame Street. Genius. Simply for the previously-highlighted-on-this-very-site reason that the be-caped numerical nosferatu's name is actually Count von Count. How good is that!? Like we said, Genius, capital gee. For every early years Einstein however, there must be a cone-headed class clown, capital dee, in this instance a part played with great gusto by the siblings of the House of Chuckle...

To our unexposed, uninitiated American cousins, I'll leave it to our British brothers and sisters to point you in the direction of Paul and Barry Elliott, a.k.a. The Chuckle Brothers, and leave you to make up your mind. Personally I shudder at the thought of their classic catchphrase, "To me...To you...To me...To you...To me...To you...". On and on and on it went, with no audible end in sight. Make it stop. It drove an eight year old Mumford HQ to drink - at one point I was taking down two litres of Ribena a day, I just didn't care anymore. Two litres; that's like 100 units of juice, 500mg of blackcurrant, almost five times the recommend daily allowance. I used to drink and drive too, straight on the Raleigh after a heavy sesh, terrible times.

The young Mumfs are still on the Stars-and-Stripes side of the ATLANTIC OCEAN as I write, tirelessly touring Sigh No More, bringing their own brand of unique banjo heat, and even unique-er brand of hot bodies, to our American friend's ears and eyes. Mumford HQ received word that temperature had reached critical level and that the boys required an urgent cooling down; they tried 'chillaxing' poolside with Jeff Bridges and a couple of white russians, before listening to 'chillwave' with Ernest Greene while eating 'chillidogs' (note to self; chillidogs presumably quite hot, replace 'chillidogs' with 'icecream') - all epic 'chilling' sho' 'nuff, but to no avail. Sometimes you just can't beat the classics...

People often assume that TOUR is an endless succession of partying, drinking, dancing and general mayhem-ing. Not entirely true. Not entirely wrong, but not entirely true either. More often than not, when looking for the ultimate wind down, the uber chill, The Sons opt for a game of Buckaroo. Load that mule, cos you never know when he's gonna buck, buck, buckaroo. You should see their faces, they love it! Can't get enough of that donkey and his little sombrero.

The only thing better than Buckaroo is Bonnaroo. For those not in the know, Bonnaroo is an amazing four-day camping festival of music and more music held June 10th - 13th on 700 acres of farmyard in beautiful Manchester, Tenessee, USA and will this year see sets from Kings of Leon, Jigga, Phoenix, The Temper Trap, The XX, LCD Soundsytem and the mighty Avett Brothers! That's it I think... Oh, and Mumford & Sons will be playing too!! *scream/swoon*

Do you have a room with a view? If you're stood within eyeshot of a window, what's your view like? I'm not gonna lie to you, ours is a bit rubbish... And that's when we can get close enough to the window to actually snatch a glance out; there's a pigeon that chills on the ledge beneath the pane. We don't get on. When I say 'chills' I mean goes mental, and when I say 'pigeon' I mean enormous half bird/half hound-of-hell uber-eagle with a penchant for flesh. Oh no... It's blates eaten Knuckles... R.I.P Knuckles. End of an era.

We need a new pet.

What we really need is a new view. A scene of unimaginable beauty. Of far afield lands and far away seas. Of four dapper gents of Indian descent dressed in full Toy Town military regalia.

Best New Band? You Bet Your Boots Straps! (And Other Assorted Sayings)

'The wise man built his house upon the rocks, house upon the rocks, house upon the rocks'. Remember that? Always hearted those old assembly-time anthems - though I always thought the foolish man probably threw down a meaner party in his house amongst the sand. I don't have copyright clearance on those words by the way, so if an old fella in a long white robe with a gnarly beard asks...

Mumford HQ itself is built upon a foundation of weird old sayings; proverbs and the such, you know, adages an' that. Best of all is our soft-furnishing phrases. Just yesterday, cries of 'What in the blue blazes...!?' rang out for no particular reason at all, just for the LOL's. For those interested, it's a slang expression originating in bronze-aged England, derived from the traditional meaning of 'a blaze', or fire, referring euphemistically to the flames of hell, essentially, 'What in the hell...!?'.

Double-points to any old saying with a colour in it, like 'Purple patch' for the ee gee, which relates to an extended run of good form. This can be traced back to Horace's De Arte Poetica, in which the great Roman poet remarked, "Often to weighty enterprises and such as profess great objects, one or two purple patches are sewn on to make fine display in the distance".

Mumford & Sons currently seem to be inhabiting something of a purple patch themselves, you know, what with the Triple J triumph and now this NME Best New Band nomination business... Hold up baby girl! What's that you're chatting? A NME Best New Band Nomination? OH. YEAH. EXCLAMATION MARK.

We here at Mumford HQ aren't generally ones for the 'rules'. We're not what you'd call 'sticklers' for them. Sure, we loosely adhere to a few choice cuts from the rump of a casual covenant - No Dunking, No Bombing, No Heavy Petting, that sort of thing - but otherwise, free choice reigns and Xerox George roams free. No dramaz. Ironically, for this harmonious social dynamic to function, it requires a Head of State, a great leader - admittedly a leader of one boy and and one errant rat (Knuckles: still on the lamb) but an elected Head of State nonetheless - a seat of officialdom currently occupied by yours truly.

In a cupboard of three, voting was tight. Knuckles took it in a landslide so I seized control by force.

Not so Winston 'Churchill' Marshall, Benjamin 'Harrison' Lovett, Ted 'Roosevelt' Dwane and Marcus 'Exception-to-the-rule' Mumford who today find themselves elected today to far loftier heights, and by far fairer means...

All you need is love... And favourites. Everyone has favourites. As children we divulge and disect our favourites at great length and with greater glee; colour, food, footballer, any number of personal preferences. It's not money that makes the world go 'round, oh no, it's favourites. Just replace the word 'gravity' with 'favourite' in any essay or exam and you'll be alright. I mean, you won't, you'll be wrong, but we're not here to discuss my academic failings.

...I will however, seize this opportunity to discuss one area of academic disaster - GCSE French. There's every possibilty that 'epic fail' was a term coined specifically to describe my French result. The examining board had to invent a another level (boo Dane boooo! We want Bobak!), a whole new world of parental pain, to mark my efforts. You'd be right in thinking that French was not a favourite subject of mine.

Which is a genuine shame: it's extraordinarily hard to play the part of urbane sophistcate when out courting if the only francais you're familiar with is 'all the rude words'. Classic. I did learn one new exotic phrase recently; Festival Super Mon Amour. Good, eh? It gets better. Festival Super Mon Amour à La Maroquinerie. Impressed? Then, get a load of this...

New News, Big Issues

Just a little heads-up for you; if you happen to be happening by the streets of any one of our Nation's fair cities and towns at some point over the next few days, you may recognise four shiny faces beaming broadly from the cover of this week's The Big Issue...

I say 'beaming', beaming implies smiling, in actuality, The Sons have adopted what can only be described as attempts at a 50's siren smoulder. Not so much beaming as Hollywood glamour beamed in via some sort of rural satellite. They're working it. I like it, it's a strong look. Perhaps the burning question, the real big issue, is what look you think The Sons should next 'rock'? Suggestions welcome in the comments box below.

Pose-striking notwithstanding, The Big Issue is clearly an organisation worthy of your attention and the magazine and interview more than worthy of a read: I believe it's what is known in the industry as 'good copy', and if you can spare a couple of minutes to make jokes at the expense of my copy, then I'm sure you can spare a few minutes and a little expense and pick a copy up too.

When a gentleman as refined as David Dye extends invitation for coffee and cake, you accept; and so it was that The Sons found themselves performing an acoustic session for Mr. Dye and National Public Radio's World Cafe earlier this ye... Hold up, scratch that, what I mean to say is last year... And the fruits of their labour are soon to be heard ringing out like New Years bells across the great states, infinity and beyond!

NPR broadcasts to over 200 stations Stateside, which is quite a lot, so, seeing as we're unable to provide you, dear reader, with compass and map, take heed these words! Listeners are able to find their local station by simply navigating their way 'round a 'so-easy-even-Xerox-George-can-use-it' 'pull-down' menu, which can be found HERE - for the former Scouts amongst you, that was officially the easiest Orienteering Badge ever.

And anyone outside The U, The S, The A can tune into the session via connection to the WXPN Philadelphia stream, which is scheduled to air Monday through Friday between 2:00 and 4:00pm EST (Eastern Standard Time... Didn't even have to Google that, how'd you like them knowledge apples?) - get your XP oN HERE!

Late in the day of original broadcast, the session may be heard on the NPR main site too... Well, if permission has been granted that is. Single threat, maybe - singularly non-threatening. We yearn for triple threat acceptance, there has to be a way...

Hang on. Just been told a triple threat can also simply refer to an individual that is just pretty amazing at three things. Interesting. Apparently these three things can be any things. Interesting. All's not lost, Mumford HQ has to be at least pretty amazing at three things, we just need to figure them out...

When Mumford HQ was knee-high to a stote on stilts, we nearly drowned. This ain't no cake walk to a picnic in the park, this is dark. Real dark. Not literally dark, but like, dark - darkly dramatic, I'm being dramatic, creating an atmosphere, setting a scene.

Here's the scene...

A sun-drenched sandy coast, hugged by a polar blue sea. A little person. A little person swimming off a sun-drenched sandy coast, hugged by a polar blue sea. A bigger person, also swimming off a sun-drenched sandy coast, hugged by a polar blue sea. A dunking. Another dunking. Dunk, dunk, slam dunk. Dunkings the likes of which one only sees on Crimewatch. I don't know if you've ever nearly drowned but our vision went black and white before melting into slow motion. We're chatting flashbacks and lights at the end of infinite tunnels - the whole shebang, the real deal. Had it not been for the intervention of C.J Parker we might not be writing this at all. Ahh, C.J...

Anyway, in adulthood, if we were to choose a way to go it would be drowning in a sea of sound... Hugged by a polar blue sea. Cause of death: drowned in sound. Or DiS.

Mumford HQ remembers with vivid affection the day the first video rental shop opened in our tiny provincial town... The mighty Ritz Rentals.

Wall after wall of straight-to-video manna; solid celluloid gold at every turn - the Wayans brother's I'm Gonna Git You Sucka! repping hard. A mock blaxploitation masterpiece of modern cinema. Nowhere else in all of Hollywood's long and illustrious history will you find a man's death attributed to an OG... as in "Overdose of Gold". Of course, at the time, such items were beyond the reach of curious little hands, and we had to make do with Pete's Dragon. Always Pete's Dragon. Don't get me wrong, Pete's Dragon is a charming mixture of live-action and animated mayhem, and it's got a dragon with a purple bowl-cut in it , so it is, by default, a bit awesome. But do you know what it doesn't have? Isaac 'Hammer' Hayes.

Those days are long since gone. Blockbuster invaded and reigned supreme. Then the internet dropped the download bomb and rained supremely on Blockbuster's parade. Politics. You're best out of it. And I'm throwing you a life-line: forget cinema, video, DVD, Blueray and your torrents, Mumford & Sons have got your back!

This is going to be spectacular - and not in that, 'talk something up because it actually isn't going to be that spectacular' non-spectacular kind-of-way, but actually spectacular! Of course, Mumford HQ only knows this second hand, writing as we do from a small cubby hole in... Where are we? It's been so long since... What month is this? Who is King? Wha' happened?

Sorry, but 'out' just didn't make contextual or grammatical sense as a title, so took it back to the OG. Moving on swiftly - today heralds the arrival of another Monday, and another addition to the family; Mumford Jr. Jr.! Mumford-Single Esq. the II! The 6th of December shall be eternally remembered for only one reason: that reason being Winter Winds released today right across the board! Well, two boards, a 7" board and an invisible, digital board. Hair-splitter. Available at all the usual places... You know HMV, iTunes, that lot.

Winter Winds is hot like fire and fast turning into something of an unofficial Christmas Anthem for all those not enthralled to the antics of Cowell and company, backed as it is by the big guns of Radio 1's A-List no less - and let me tell you, guns don't get no bigger... Don't worry though, it's Friday, which means it's Saturday tomorrow, which means you can have a much deserved lie-in. Unless you work in a shop. Or any other job that requires your presence on a weekend. In which case, sincerest commiserations. But like we say, it is quite cold. We're often asked what's with the name Mumford & Sons; principally, 'Why are you called Mumford and Sons?', and, 'If Mumford & Sons were a shop, what would it be? Butchers? Bakers? Candlestick makers?' - none of the above, though apparently there is a Mumford & Sons Butchers somewhere trivia fans. Most guess at furniture removal. This is either;

A. Amazing, if based on observations of physique, stamina and lifting prowess

B. Terrible, if based on dropping priceless artefact abilities

Either way, also wrong. The family business is actually that of relationship counsellors. Generations of agony Aunts, Uncles and now Sons - though technically, nephews - passing on expert knowledge gleaned from centuries of wining and dining, and loving and fighting. One pearl of wisdom for you: never kiss on a first date, it's all about the mystique. Second date? Get wild. Mystique out the window. So-so-so scandalous...

Wow, reckless words. The second night at Shepherd's Bush Empire is gonna be fun fun fun!

So, the Winter Winds Fair at St. Martins-In-The-Field sold out pretty quickly. Tickets were super limited, so whether you managed to get hold of a mitten-covered handful, or just two tickets, or even just one for that matter, then consider yourself very lucky.

Winter Fair: Over Sold Tickets - An Apology

To those of you who raced to buy tickets for the Mumford & Sons Winter Fair, and believed you had successfully purchased tickets from MusicGlue, only to then be informed today that in fact you do not have tickets, please accept our sincerest apologies.

This was due to the huge volume of traffic experienced by MusicGlue's site, which resulted in the ticket system overloading and consequently crashing. With no ticket system in place, the site was unable to monitor sales, which led to the event being over sold. Everyone who has invalid tickets has now been notified and can expect to be fully refunded shortly.

*The Winter is now totally SOLD OUT - no tickets are available on the door*

Growing up, a lot is made of what is right and what is wrong; the tough hide of our parents governance was stretched taught over a skeleton of rigid laws - laws that oft give life to howls of injustice as the voices of a thousand tiny Davids scream 'It's not fair!' into the faces of unrelenting parents and their Goliath-sized final word. Indeed, the issue of fairness is a far murkier pond in the garden of infant development, where, in the place of starkly contrasting blacks and whites of right and wrong, the child finds a swirling pool of grayscale, capillary waves of confusion lapping at the psyche's edge.

What's that you say Mum? Life isn't fair? Cheers. Well helpful. Well fact too. Sadly, you don't need a hawk's hindsight to see in adulthood just how firmly that sentiment stands true. But do you know what? If you're finding life unfair, then you should also find some solace in the fact that you're not alone... After all, who doesn't? It's the great leveller - except death of course... and spirit levels HAHAHA - so let's not dwell on the unfair and instead rejoice in the fair...

...In this instance, the Mumford & Sons Winter Fair! Yessir, The Sons are a festive cocktail of proud-as-punch and pleased-as-pudding (made that one up) to announce that the 2nd of December will see them take to St. Martin-In-The-Fields in Trafalgar Square to perform a ridiculously special Christmas show for you all! I say 'all', there are only 150 tickets available for this seasonal spectacular so fix-up like a Wise Man, look sharp like St. Nick, and get all over these tickets like reindeer on roofs... That doesn't make a whole lot of sense, what I'm trying to say is don't sleep on these tickets like a baby in a manger... Forget it, just make sure you buy a ticket...

The NME Chart; Dispelling The 'Charts Are Boring' Myth, Since Yesterday...

Yesterday was a memorable one for a multitude of reasons: firstly, it was a Monday. Amazing. Secondly, it was the 2nd of November. Unbelievable. And thirdly... did we mention it was a Monday? Perhaps (almost certainly) most important of all, it just also happened to be the day the first ever NME Chart was announced. True fax. Not only that, but an NME chart that saw Mumford & Sons' Little Lion Man make an inaugural entrance at a very respectable and actually-quite-colossal No. 10! It's all based on sales of only the artists featured "in the NME world" - which is the magazine, it's radio station and it's website apparently, which is nice.

Number TEN! Like Downing Street, but better.

You can watch all the videos featured in the Top 40 on NME TV (Sky 382) every Saturday, and you can catch a special countdown of the Top 10 songs/videos on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:00am and 6:00pm... that's two potential viewings so no excuses... unless you don't have Sky, in which case, carry on...

Dearest Friends,

World Wide WELCOME to our website. Welcome to our very own unique corner of this bizarre and faintly glorious world of sites, blogs, tweets and streams.

We hereby launch the MUMFORD & SONS website with both joy and ambition. With joy, because it feels like the beginning of us being a proper band with a fancy website which, we have to admit, is pretty fun. With ambition, because we indulge in visions of creating a community – a family – albeit online, where we can share with you, you can share with us, and you can share with each other. Utopian? Yessir.

We reckon the internet is alright. In fact, we may not have been here as a band without it. The fact that we can drive to a town we’ve never been to and play shows to people who know our music, is incredible, and helped to no end by the internet.

The danger is that we all get better doing life online than we do in the flesh. That ain’t the idea. We still prefer eye contact to skype contact. Sometimes there’s just a bit too much information– and we’re not that interesting. BUT, that said, we endeavour to have a good old crack at being web geeks.

Our website will be a place where you can find out what we’re doing as a band, where we’re playing, what we’re releasing and all that stuff. We’re going to try and put quality before quantity, and await your feedback with baited breath. The idea is that it’s also a place where we all get to rub shoulders a bit, speak our minds about stuff not just to do with music, as you’ll see soon enough.

Our mantra: Don’t always just write the first thing that comes into your head, and don’t rush. There’s no rush, hombres.

Hoe Down Album Lauch Announced!

Picture this... the Autumn sun retreating into hibernation the light fading on a barn, two figures stand with backs together their breath quickening; ten paces take them away from each other before they turn on the final step and face their fates, a hundred lights awake dark corners as the band strikes up, and the figures shape to throw the first moves of the night - and so begins...

So here we are, the four of us, 500 of you and one hell of an album launch party!

On Monday the 5th Oct, we'll be hosting our very own Hoedown out in a Barn deep in the Hertfordshire courtryside, and we'd like to invite you to join us..

We've arranged for a number of coaches to pick up ticket holders from Kings Cross, London at 6pm on Monday, bringing everyone out to join us... there will be a live set from our goodselves and some close friends, as well as an hour of barndancing from the super Cutashine.

Buses will leave the Barn at 11.30pm, and all prevailing and going to plan we'll be back in London, York Way, no later than 1am.

If not for fine fortune and a little endeavour, we Sons may well have found ourselves travelling very different roads: were it not for the various interventions of higher hands and trusted guides we could've been bad guys - the very worst, each of us contemptible, criticised and cursed; an ailing mob masterminded by a failing Fat Sam... All this could definitely have happened... It feels as though it may actually have, in another time and another place, and I think Dexter Fletcher was there... Odd.

Or teachers. We could have been teachers! So noble the educator. Imagine a crisp September morning, first period, English language - 'The cliché'. And there could surely be no finer example to inscribe upon the blackboard than, 'The best things in life are free...'.
