Heads up, New York – with just one week to go until ‘Johannesburg – a South African Experience’ opens its doors at Brooklyn’s Okay Space, we’re excited to announce the full programme of events.
From June 14-19, the pop-up will celebrate the release of the mini-album ‘Johannesburg’ and will showcase Gentlemen of the Road photos from across the years, as well as looking at the culture and beauty of South Africa, putting a spotlight on some of the country’s best contemporary artists, photographers and musicians.
Artists on display include: Ted Dwane, Marcus Haney, Chris Maas, Ty Johnson, David East, Kristin-Lee Moolman, David Tshabalala, Dahlia Maubane and Andile Buka.
The exhibition will be open from 1-5pm everyday to the public. The below events will begin from 6-10pm unless stated otherwise – spaces may be limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

PANEL DISCUSSION: YOU’VE GOT TO HEAR THIS.
A night of musical discovery and stories from your favorite DJs, musicians, and artists including Rich Medina and friends. They will take us on an interactive journey through the African or African-inspired music that has influenced them the most.
Our storytellers will use personal anecdotes and snippets of tracks to illuminate what sounds have been most formative and inspirational in their journeys as creators.
THURSDAY 16TH JUNE
SCREENING: “THE PEOPLE VERSUS THE RAINBOW NATION”
40th anniversary of YOUTH DAY. A South African holiday commemorating the 1976 student uprisings in Soweto.
We’ll host a screening of “The People Versus the Rainbow Nation”, a documentary by Lebogang Rasethaba that looks at the current student uprisings, and how they link historically.

LIVE MUSIC CURATED BY OKAYAFRICA
SATURDAY 18TH JUNE
DAYTIME (4-6PM): FOUND SOUND NATION’S PORTABLE STREET STUDIO
Make music from found sounds around the area with Freshlyground’s Kyla-Rose Smith and emcees from the township of Nyanga in Cape Town, South Africa.
EVENING (7pm): LIVE SET FROM BEATENBERG
SUNDAY 19TH JUNE
BIOSCOPE FILM SCREENINGS: INCLUDING “LOVE THE ONE YOU LOVE”
The Bioscope is curating an afternoon of short films including “Love The One You Love” by Jenna Bass. The Bioscope is the only truly independent cinema in Johannesburg screening local content, documentaries and cult classics.
This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Gentlemen of the Road, OkayAfrica and South African Tourism USA.
